The National Plasterers Council says resurfacing becomes necessary "when problems like cracks and deterioration of the finish can no longer be patched or repaired and/or the pool's appearance is no longer acceptable"[15].
Common signs
Angi lists these signs that a pool needs resurfacing[14]:
- Plaster that flakes or peels
- Surface stains
- A rough plaster surface
- Discoloration
- Cracks
- Rust stains
- Rebound cracks in the pool steps
- On fiberglass pools, a failing fiberglass surface
Terms you will hear
- Delamination: "the separation of a material from itself or from the substrate" (NPC glossary)[18].
- Etching: visible pitting or removal of material from the surface (NPC glossary)[18]. The NPC ties it to aggressive water: low calcium hardness, low pH or low alkalinity[17].
What is usually not a defect
- The NPC's finish disclosure says mottling and color variation are normal for plaster-type finishes, not defects[19].
- It says crazing (fine hairline "check" cracks) is also normal and not a defect[19].
- It says to judge the finish with the pool full of water, in natural light[19].
When to drain
- The Las Vegas Valley Water District says pool professionals recommend draining every 3–5 years and that you don't need to notify the district. It suggests draining and refilling in May or June, when excessive-use charge thresholds are higher, and spreading the refill over two billing periods[6].
- For a resurfacing job, the contractor normally drains the pool. Ask who drains it, where the water goes and how long the shell will sit empty in the sun.
